Lovlin Borgohain gave India a present on her birthday by clinching gold in the Asian Games women's 75kg final on Friday. The boxer from Assam turns 29 today.

In doing so, she ended India's 12-year wait for a women's boxing gold at the Asian Games.

Mary Kom clinched gold in the flyweight (51 kg) category at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

Lovlina defeated China's Ziyi Bao in the final. Olympic medallist Lovlina defeated Bao, 5-0, by unanimous decision.

The Indian had to settle for silver in the previous edition, after losing to China's Li Qian in the final.

Indian boxers have improved their performance from the last edition by securing six medals in Aichi-Nagoya.

Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg) won bronze medals, while Parveen Hooda (65kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg) will fight for gold later in the day.

India's best-ever boxing performance at the Asian Games came at Guangzhou 2010, when the contingent won nine medals, including two gold.

The strong showing in the Asian Games comes on the back of India's record-breaking campaign at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month.
